Russian Dwarf Hamsters

I couldn't be like everyone else and just have a plain old hamster (not that there's anything wrong with them). I had to be different, I had to get a Russian Dwarf Hamster. Rory is so cute and we love her to death except for the undeniable fact that she'll bite you if your hand is in her cage for any reason. To see more pictures of here click here.

**FAQ**

Q. How long do they live for?
A. They live to be about 1-2 years

Q. What do they eat?
A. She eats regular run of the mill hamster food and the occasional hamster treat.

Q. What kind of cage and bedding do I need?
A. Any regular hamster cage and any bedding will do, they aren't picky animals.

Q. Should I have more than one?
A. No, hamsters are solitary animals. Once they are 3 months old they become cannibalistic. Never keep more than one hamster ina cage at a time.

Q. How much will this set me back?
A. Not a whole lot. Rory was about $10 when I bought her but since they are more common now they are now less expensive. I think they're around $6 now. A good cage plus attachments is about $30. (I recommend HabiTrail)

Q. What are their common health problems?
A. Other than obesity (remember the wheel) not much can stop a hamster.

Q. Are they easy to find in pet stores?
A. In the recent months they have become more popular. Most pet stores carry them now a days.

Q. What kind of maintenance do they require?
A. They are low maintenance. As long as you feed them, clean their cage and let them run around in a small rodent ball they are more than happy.

Q. When do they sleep?
A. Hamsters are nocturnal but try to tell mine that. I think Rory is an insomniac because whenever I'm in the room she's up and running and when I try to sleep I can hear her from the other room.

Q. Do they make noise?
A. Not the hamster itself. However Rory chews on the bars of her cage and her wheel squeaks no matter what I do to it.
