Fancy Mice

Mice are very fun and very simple pets to have. We have four of them, Neilson, Carbunkle, Pinky and Domino. We used to have a fifth one, Warner, but she passed away Jan. 25, 2003. To see pics of them go here.

Q. How long do they live for?
A. They live to be about 1-2 years.

Q. What do they eat?
A. They eat commercial small rodent food (like hamster food).

Q. What kind of cage and bedding do I need?
A. We have ours in a colourful hamster/gerbil cage. There's four of them in there but there is always room for them to run around. Be sure to include a wheel so that they can have some exercise. Any bedding will do nicely for these little guys.

Q. Should I have more than one?
A. Yes, mice love the company, we have 4.

Q. How much will this set me back?
A. About $3 a mouse. Their cage is was $20.

Q. What are their common health problems?
A. They can have heart attacks easily so be calm and quiet around them.

Q. Are they easy to find in pet stores?
A. Pretty easy, most pet stores carry them.

Q. What kind of maintenance do they require?
A. Comparable to hamsters, they are low maintenance. You have to clean their cage about twice a week because although they are small, they sure are smelly.

Q. When do they sleep?
A. They are mostly nocturnal but are known to be up and about at all hours of the day.

Q. Do they make noise?
A. Yes, but only when they are frightened.
