Rizzo or Ratz0r Blue, our baby Blue

We have 2 rats, Rizzo (aka Ratz0r) and Blue. Ratz0r loves to be held and explore while Blue is still relatively new to us and hasn't fully developed trust. Rizzo is about 6 months while Blue just turned 3 months. To see more pictures of them click here.

**FAQ**

Q. How long do they live for?
A. Males live about 1 1/2 - 2 years while females live about 2-3 years

Q. What do they eat?
A.Well, our guys have Nutri-Block (most of our rodents do) and the occasional dog treat. Try to avoid sweets and fatty foods.

Q. What kind of cage and bedding do I need?
A. A guinea pig cage or a ten gallon aquarium with a secure lid will suit your needs just fine. Pine shavings are a good choice for bedding. Also be sure to include toys and a hidey home (like a box or store bought type) as they like darkness and a place to hide

Q. Should I have more than one?
A. Yes. Rats are very social creatures. It is possible to have only one but make sure to give him (or her) lots of love and attention, they love human contact. Two females are more liable to get along while housed together than males.

Q. How much will this set me back?
A. Not a whole lot. Rizzo cost $6 while Blue cost us $15. It all depends on the store you buy them at. Cages are pretty cheap all things considered, they are small rodents and require a medium size cage.

Q. What are their common health problems?
A. Rats can suffer from many different things such as colds, allergies and skin disease. Ensure that you keep their cage clean. If your rat is acting strange, watch him closely for warning signs and then take him to the vet.

Q. Are they easy to find in pet shops?
A. Definatly, at least in Ottawa. Almost every pet shop carries them. This will allow you to compare prices, breeders and ages and that is always useful.

What kind of maintenance do they require?
A. I'd say medium maintenance. They need about an hour out of their cage daily. Their cages can get really smelly if you don't clean them every couple of days.

Q. When do they sleep?
A. They are mostly nocturnal but ours are up pretty much whenever we go into their room. They love attention.

Q. Do they make noise?
A. Not generally. They make noises when they feel threatned. I've never heard mine say anything.
